Located on the corner of 6th and Main Streets in the historic district in Laurel, Maryland, St. Philip's Episcopal Church has been a fixture in the community since 1848. The construction of the original nave (worship space), which is still being used today, was commissioned by Horace and Louisa Snowden Capron (Montpelier Mansion) to serve the Episcopal community in Laurel.
St. Philip's is one of the original Episcopal churches in Maryland established from the Emigration of the Church of England to the United States. The church bell, minted in 1784, is still being used today and was obtained from St. Paul's Church, Baltimore. In 1814, this bell rang out with many others to warn of the impending British attack on Baltimore. In more recent history, Jane Dixon, the first female Episcopal bishop was rector of St. Philip's during the 1980's.
Today, St. Philip's is an active, culturally diverse parish with strong ties to the community. Service to the community is paramount to St. Philip's mission. From hosting Winterhaven for the homeless community of Laurel, to providing a place for those in recovery to meet, to hosting the annual community Thanksgiving dinner, and weekly Toastmasters and Girl Scouts meetings, St. Philip's maintains a commitment to community service. Not a week goes by where the doors of the church are not open to the community for local and worldwide efforts. The doors to St. Philip's are always open to serve those in need.
Your tax deductible financial contribution will go towards efforts to repair the nave and roof; to help celebrate another 162 years of St. Philip's - a place providing spiritual support and service to the community of Laurel.
