About Our Staff

The Rev. Dr. Sheila N. McJilton, Rector

Sheila in Ravenclaw sm.jpg

Sheila has hung out in the Church all of her life—her childhood and adolescence spent in the Southern Baptist tradition. However, she did not find a true, deep spiritual home until she experienced Holy Eucharist in an Episcopal church during college.

As a young adult, Sheila was confirmed in the Episcopal Church, and thus began a long journey, in fits and starts, of discerning leadership in this tradition. She ran from God, but found out that is a futile endeavor, and finally gave in, attending Virginia Seminary for her Master of Divinity degree. After ordination, she served in parishes on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Wilmington, DE, and then landed here at St. Philip’s in Laurel, Md. In 2014, she earned her Doctor of Ministry from VTS.

Sheila is passionate about radical hospitality and welcome in a faith community, preaching well, and teaching about the Christian faith—in a variety of ways.  Sheila is also passionate about not just casting a vision, but enabling lay leaders to work with her to realize that vision of God’s beloved community.

Other than living out her vocation in this parish (which takes most of her time), Sheila’s hobbies are music of various genres, re-absorbing Harry Potter books and movies, creative writing, and photography. Sheila’s family includes Pat, to whom she is now married after many years together, her adult son and his wife, three sisters (one by blood, the others by a former marriage), and several sister-friends whom she cherishes.

Laura McGuire

Laura McGuire, Director of Youth and Family Ministries, has been working in the arena of Christian Formation since 1994, when she became part of the Sunday School team at a small Episcopal congregation in Baltimore City. Since then, she has worked with congregations and dioceses developing and implementing formation and evangelism resources for children, teens, and young adults. In addition to her work at St. Philip’s, Laura also serves as the Formation Leader for Gilead House, the Episcopal Service Corps program in Maryland, and as the ministry coordinator at Church on the Square in Baltimore. She also serves as a consultant for youth in the Diocese of Maryland and as a Godly Play trainer. In her spare time, she loves to cook, make jewelry, listen to really loud live music, and seems to be continually relearning how to knit.
